PADI Junior Divemaster Course
The PADI Junior Divemaster course is a new programme, currently only available through PADI Approved Youth Training centres such as Hidden Depths Scuba School.
The PADI Junior Divemaster course is a subset of the PADI Divemaster course. The course is designed for young enthusiastic divers, aged 15 to 17, who want to continue their education and are interested in leadership level training but are not old enough to become PADI Divemasters. PADI Junior Divemasters complete portions of the Divemaster course with some modifications to performance requirements.
What Will You Learn?
Becoming a PADI Junior Divemaster consists of the following elements - knowledge development through PADI's Divemaster eLearning programme, practical skill development through pool and open water dives, waterskill exercises and the Junior Divemaster final exam.
What are the prerequisites for the PADI Junior Divemaster Course?
To take the Junior Divemaster Course you need the following:
- Aged 15 to 17 years old
- PADI Junior Rescue Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organisation)
- Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care qualification (or qualifying first aid and CPR training from another organisation) completed within the past 24 months
- Have at least 20 dives to begin the course
- For certification, have at least 40 dives including experience of deep dives, navigation dives and dives at night
How Does The Course Work?
We run the Junior Divemaster course on a continuing basis, similar to an apprenticeship. The course is expected to take 3 to 6 months to complete which allows for a relaxed pace of training. We expect candidates to complete pool dives a few times a month, plus join us for open water dives roughly once a month (although more than this is great). The majority of theory is home study, although your instructor will supplement with with classroom sessions (remotely where needed).
The Role Of A Junior Divemaster
After becoming certified as a PADI Junior Divemaster you will be prepared and confident in assisting an instructor in the set up and management of a dive site, be able to demonstrate scuba skills involving two people (such as air sharing or the loose cylinder band exercise) and conduct dive briefings. You can also conduct environmental presentations, and importantly you will gain valuable experience towards earning a full Divemaster rating upon turning 18.
Adult Divemaster Upgrade
Once aged 18 you can upgrade to an adult Divemaster rating. If completed within 36 months of your Junior Divemaster programme, you can credit certain sections towards your course. There will also be new content to cover, but your Junior Divemaster rating will give you an excellent basis to build from, as well as a big boost of confidence knowing you're already a Junior Divemaster.
